Add a jewel to the Queen of American Lake’s crown, as this week Lake George was named by U.S. News and World Report as one of the best weekend getaways from New York City.

Written to help residents of the Big Apple determine the best destination for their “much-needed escape,” the magazine looked at information from travelers and experts. “Whether you’re planning a couples retreat or a fun-filled family weekend, these getaways have everything you need for a memorable trip,” the article reads.

With weekend trips organized by approximate travel time from the city (two hours, three hours, etc., with Lake George landing in the “four-hour” category), U.S. News and World Report offer 18 scenic retreats, including such destinations as Fire Island (three hours), The Poconos (two hours), The Hamptons (three), Philadelphia (two) and Saranac Lake (five hours).

“Lake George is filled with fun activities the whole family can enjoy,” the article boasts. Beaches, hiking, adventure sports, boating, restaurants, and museums are all mentioned, as are Adirondack Winery and The Sagamore resort.

In the past, Lake George was named among must-visit destinations by the likes of TIME MONEY’s Best in Travel, Trip Advisor, Country Living Magazine, New York Times, Travel + Leisure, and Travel Channel, to name a few.

Clarity of the lake, family-friendly activities, cultural destinations, outdoor sports, nostalgic charm, fine dining, camping, and historical attractions are among the many reasons our region is known across the country and, increasingly, around the world.
