At the EDC Warren County, we’ve long recognized the immense potential of North Creek and the Town of Johnsburg. This opportunity is being realized through transformative projects and strategic investments that will diversify the local economy, create jobs, and enhance the area’s appeal for residents and visitors alike.
Gore Mountain’s Expanding Horizons
Gore Mountain, a winter destination cherished by skiers and outdoor enthusiasts, is entering a new chapter. In response to the shifting climate and demand for year-round recreational opportunities, Gore Mountain is expanding its offerings with exciting summer attractions. The North Creek Ski Bowl Lodge, opening in fall 2025, and the ZipCoaster, launching in spring 2026, are central to this shift. These projects aim to attract more diverse visitors, extend economic benefits into the off-season, and strengthen connections to the Town of Johnsburg.
Attracting more visitors means increasing revenue for local businesses, creating jobs, and revitalizing the community. The ZipCoaster alone is projected to bring 40,000 new visitors annually and provide 25 seasonal jobs. These efforts are backed by the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), a crucial partner in making this vision a reality.
The Critical Role of Infrastructure
Infrastructure investment is essential for these plans to succeed. The expansion of the North Creek sewer system will support Gore Mountain’s growth and prepare the area for year-round tourism by accommodating increased visitors, residents, and business activity.
Enhanced public transit, particularly through the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), is another key initiative. Expanding connections between North Creek and the broader region, including Lake George, will make outdoor attractions more accessible, bolster the local economy, and create new business opportunities. EDC, Warren County LDC, and other partners are actively working to bring these improvements to fruition.
Additionally, modern broadband access is crucial. The EDC has led efforts to expand broadband in the region, bringing Johnsburg closer to parity with the roughly 90% of Warren County that now has coverage. This progress ensures residents and businesses are equipped for today’s digital demands.
Barton Mines and APA Permit: A Milestone for Growth
The Adirondack Park Agency (APA) has approved a new permit for Barton Mines, extending its world-class garnet operations for at least 66 more years. This approval supports responsible mining that contributes to local economic development while preserving the Adirondacks’ natural beauty. The EDC proudly supported Barton Mines in this multi-year effort.
A Vision for Year-Round Economic Vitality
The EDC has long emphasized broadening the tourism season and fostering a sustainable, diverse experience economy as the foundation for the region’s future. By integrating new attractions, infrastructure improvements, and strategic partnerships, North Creek and Johnsburg are positioned as thriving year-round destinations.
Looking Ahead
The combination of infrastructure upgrades, new attractions, and collaborative efforts has set the stage for economic transformation in North Creek and Johnsburg. These investments will diversify the local economy, create jobs, and provide new opportunities for residents.
As the EDC, we are proud to play a key role in this transformation. We are excited about the future of North Creek and Johnsburg and look forward to seeing how these projects will contribute to a vibrant, sustainable economy. With continued support and collaboration, the vision for a thriving, year-round tourism destination is within reach, positioning this corner of the county as a true gem of the Adirondacks.
