Spring is finally here and ski season is coming to an end. Fortunately, that doesn’t stop the fun at West Mountain, a ski area located in Queensbury, New York, just outside the Adirondack Park.
In March, West Mountain held its annual Slush Cup and Cardboard Sled Derby. More than 20 skiers and snowboarders registered and, dressed in creative outfits, attempted to make it across the “slush” without falling into a cold pit of water. The event included live music by Bobby Dick and Susie Q, and a ceremony with trophy winners.
In early April, West Mountain hosted Northwest Fest for fresh-air fun skiing on the Northwest trails and live music and grilling on the patio at the base area. Music included Let’s be Leonard and Switch.
Music continues this summer at West Mountain, with a Summer Concert Series from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturdays. Bands scheduled include Ten Most Wanted on July 2 and Jukebox Rebellion on August 20. Follow West Mountain on Facebook for updates on the concert series.
The mountain has other ways to entertain throughout the summer, including high-ropes courses, scenic chair rides, hikes, and biking. West Mountain offers six high-ropes courses for all different ability levels, ranging from beginner to advanced. Ropes participants take the chairlift to the ropes park, where they are met by the West Mountain climbing crew who will outfit guests with helmets and harnesses to journey through rope spider webs, ziplines, log waves, and more.
Another way to enjoy West Mountain in the summer is by bike, with more than 25 cross-country and downhill trails for amazing riding. Riders can take the chairlift to the top and ride their own bikes or rent from the mountain. They offer mountain bike rentals and protective gear packages.
Other activities on the mountain during the summer include taking the chairlift for hiking or yoga sessions. The top of West Mountain has stunning views of the Adirondacks, Green Mountains, and the Hudson River Valley region. At the top, guests are invited to hike the mixed-use cross-country trails, including the Crow’s Nest trail, which boasts views of West Mountain’s beautiful scenic Hudson River valley overlook. Hikers can then take the chairlift down to the base or follow the Slideshow trail down the mountain to the Base Lodge. Hikers are welcome to hike on ski trails, as well. Yoga takes place at the summit of West Mountain for a 60-minute all-levels Vinyasa flow class.
Guests can picnic at one of several picnic locations while enjoying West Mountain activities. Packages, which include a chairlift ride, are available online. Picnic lunches are prepared daily by West’s in-house chef, packaged in eco-friendly boxes, and placed in picnic baskets.
