Glens Falls, New York MSA Medical Device Cluster Summary

Medical Device Cluster Overview:

In a recent study issued in June 2020 by The Center For Economic Growth, Inc. in Albany it was revealed that Warren County, NY has the highest concentration of medical equipment manufacturing and supplier employment of any county in the US. The development of a medical device cluster in the Glens Falls, NY MSA (combined Warren & Washington counties) dates back to the 1950’s and 60’s when several local entrepreneurs launched catheter manufacturing operations in the region. These catheter products evolved over time as technology advancements increased the ability to design and manufacture catheters into much more sophisticated instruments and devices which are now able to perform increased levels of precision therapeutic, diagnostic and interventional operations. The original catheter/medical device companies were acquired by larger firms that continued to grow locally utilizing the expertise of two generations of highly skilled labor with training specific to the medical device industry. Most of the smaller sized medical device companies established in the region were formed by former employees of these original core companies. Several have become very high growth performers due to increased market demands for non-invasive medical procedures. Nearly the entire medical device cluster located in the Glens Falls MSA region has been developed by internal market expansions, spin offs and/or start-ups that have grown into larger operations that in some cases were acquired by national companies.

The Delcath treatment is called Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion (PHP)™. PHP™ can be performed in an operating room or in a radiology suite under local or general anesthesia. Delcath’s approach to treatment employs a system of catheters and filters to isolate the liver from the general circulatory system and delivers a chemotherapeutic agent directly to the liver. The filters then remove the therapeutic agent from the blood before the blood circulates to the body. In this manner, the tumor is exposed to a high dose of the therapeutic, but all other regions of the body remain protected from the toxic effects.
