A new article from Adirondack Explorer reinforces something we’ve been discussing across the region:
This is not just a healthcare issue, it is an economic crisis as well as a social one for the North Country.
The Healthcare Coalition for the North Country Broadband Alliance led by leaders including longtime rural healthcare expert Dr. John Rugge, is proposing a new rural healthcare model, not just reacting to Medicaid cuts, but rethinking how care is delivered across the Adirondacks.
At its core: Medicaid changes including the 340B program create system-level risk to rural healthcare.
That risk extends directly into the regional economy.
The coalition’s approach: a more distributed, coordinated system, it mirrors what we’ve seen work through the North Country:
Regional challenges require regional solutions.
In the Adirondacks, healthcare is not just a service.
At is core it is a major employer and a prerequisite for economic sustainability.
If access weakens: Workforce declines, housing demand softens, communities struggle to remain viable.
The takeaway: Sustaining healthcare is essential to sustaining the Adirondack economy and its year-round communities.
EDC is actively working with the coalition and regional partners to align healthcare, connectivity, housing, and workforce strategies into a unified approach to sustainability.
